Then we continue to “Acjanaco “, the park’s entrance.
Itinerary
Early in the morning, we start our 8-hour trip on a road that partly goes up to 4000 meters above sea level. On the way, we have a few stops, e.g. to see the pre-inka cemetery Ninamarca and the famous folkloric village of Paucartambo (2900 m above sea level). Then we continue to “Acjanaco “, the park’s entrance. From here we go downhill through the cloud forest, where we can see a spectacular vegetation (orchids, ferns, bromeliads, begonias etc.). Maybe we have the chance to see the first mammals, like e.g. woolly monkeys or capuchin monkeys. Furthermore, we will visit the “Cock of the rock “(rupícola peruviana), Peru’s national bird, to see it dancing its famous mating dance. On our further way we will see quetzals, tanagers, trogons, hummingbirds and other beautiful, colourful birds. We will take our breakfast, snacks and lunch on the road (included in the price). In the afternoon, we arrive at our Bamboo Lodge (700m above sea level), where we will have dinner and then spend the night in double rooms with private bath.
After an early breakfast we continue with our minibus: we pass the village of Pilcopata and cross the river of the same name to get to the small port of Atalaya (550 m). On the way we stop for some walks to observe birds and to visit the spectacular hummingbird sanctuary, where we can observe and photograph more than 15 species of hummingbirds and others colorful bird species.
Before reaching Atalaya we enjoy a great view of the river basin from a lookout point. At the port we embark on a 10-minute journey in a 15-meter motorized canoe down the Alto Madre de Dios River. Along the rocky banks of the river we have the opportunity to see wildlife such Tiger Herons, Kingfishers, Skimmers and some of the monkey species that live in Manu. In the afternoon we walk on the trails at Amazonia Lodge, Evening night walk to see insects, frogs, snake’s caimans etc.
We spend the night at Amazonia Lodge (double rooms).
Before sunrise we take our boat for about 30 minutes to visit the parrot macaw clay lick This is a special place on the river bank where parrots, parakeets and small macaws, including the Chestnut fronted Macaw and the rare Blue-Headed Macaw, come to eat minerals which they need for digestion. We enjoy a healthy breakfast at this special place, where water and earth meet and create a unique biodiversity. Then we go to see one of the “giants of the amazon rainforest “, the famous ceiba pentandra, the biggest tree of the Amazonia. Later we visit the little lake “Machuwasi We use a wooden raft to explore the lake and observe the abundant birdlife: we may see the Horned Screamer, Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Pale-eyed Blackbird and different Antbirds and Antwrens. “. This place is special because water and earth meet and create an extraordinary biodiversity. We can observe a lot of birds and maybe some mammals.
After the morning tour we return to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon we walk on the trails of Amazonia lodge to see more animals. You also have the option to climb our 25 m observation tower for a spectacular view over the Alto Madre de Dios River.
After breakfast we take the boat back to Atalaya. Here our comfortable van is waiting for us for our return trip through the cloud forest and over the Andes back to Cusco. We stop whenever we spot animals and we stop for lunch. We arrive in Cusco around 6 pm, transfer to your hotel.
