Itinerary
From the Andes to the Amazon Cloud Forest – Bamboo Lodge
Your Manu Cultural Zone Tour begins early in the morning with a scenic overland journey from Cusco, traveling through dramatic Andean landscapes before descending into the Amazon rainforest. Along the way, we make meaningful cultural and historical stops, including the pre-Inca cemetery of Ninamarca and the traditional Andean town of Paucartambo, located at 2,900 meters above sea level and known for its colorful folklore, colonial bridge, and strong local traditions.
Continuing our ascent, we reach Acjanaco Pass, the official gateway to Manu National Park, where the Andes meet the Amazon Basin. From this point, the route descends into the cloud forest, one of the most biologically rich ecosystems in the region. The misty forest is filled with orchids, ferns, bromeliads, begonias, and towering moss-covered trees.
This area offers excellent opportunities for wildlife observation. With a bit of luck, we may encounter woolly monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and a wide variety of birdlife, including quetzals, trogons, tanagers, and the iconic Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird, often seen displaying its vibrant courtship ritual.
Throughout the day, we enjoy breakfast, snacks, and lunch en route (all meals included), allowing us to focus fully on the journey and its changing landscapes.
By late afternoon, we arrive at Bamboo Lodge, located at 700 meters above sea level and surrounded by tropical rainforest. This welcoming jungle lodge offers a peaceful introduction to the Amazon. After settling into comfortable private rooms with ensuite bathrooms, we enjoy dinner and spend our first night immersed in the sounds of the rainforest.
Reforestation Experience – Machuwasi Lake Wildlife Exploration
After breakfast, we actively participate in our Amazon reforestation project, where each traveler plants a native tree in a private conservation area currently undergoing ecological restoration. This hands-on experience allows you to contribute directly to the long-term preservation of the Amazon rainforest while learning about local conservation efforts within the Manu Cultural Zone.
Next, we visit the hummingbird garden, a colorful and lively area where multiple species of hummingbirds gather. This is an excellent opportunity for birdwatching and photography, as these fast-moving birds feed just a few meters away.
Later in the morning, we travel to the riverside town of Atalaya, where we board our private motorized boat and begin our scenic journey along the Madre de Dios River toward Erika Lodge, our accommodation for the second night deep in the Amazon rainforest.
In the afternoon, we explore Machuwasi Lake, a pristine oxbow lake surrounded by dense rainforest and rich wildlife. During a peaceful canoe excursion, we may encounter hoatzins, toucans, capybaras, monkeys, and a wide variety of bird species that thrive in this unique ecosystem of the Manu Cultural Zone.
After dinner, there is an optional guided night walk around the lodge. This nocturnal excursion offers a fascinating glimpse into the Amazon after dark, where we can observe frogs, insects, spiders, and other night-active creatures that emerge once the jungle comes alive under the stars.
Accommodation note:
At this lodge, bathrooms and showers are shared, providing a rustic and authentic jungle experience in harmony with the natural surroundings.
Parrot and Macaw Clay Lick – Amazon Rainforest Experience
Before sunrise, we board our motorized canoe for a 30-minute journey along the Alto Madre de Dios River to visit one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the Manu Cultural Zone: the Parrot and Macaw Clay Lick.
Each morning, hundreds of parrots, parakeets, and small macaws — including the Chestnut-fronted Macaw and the rare Blue-headed Macaw — gather to feed on mineral-rich clay, an essential natural supplement that aids digestion and helps maintain their vibrant plumage. As we enjoy this extraordinary wildlife display, we also savor a healthy breakfast surrounded by the sounds of the Amazon rainforest.
After this unforgettable experience, we continue deeper into the forest to visit one of the giants of the Amazon, the legendary Ceiba pentandra. One of the tallest and most sacred trees in the rainforest, standing beneath its massive roots and towering trunk is a humbling moment that truly reflects the power and beauty of the Amazon.
In the afternoon, we explore the primary rainforest of Manu on guided forest trails near the lodge. This walk offers excellent opportunities to discover hidden wildlife, tropical plants, and medicinal trees within one of the most pristine forests in the Amazon Basin.
We spend the night once again at Erika Lodge, falling asleep to the peaceful sounds of the jungle.
Return Journey Through the Cloud Forest – Back to Cusco
After an early breakfast, we bid farewell to the Amazon rainforest and begin our return journey by motorized canoe, traveling upriver along the Madre de Dios basin to Atalaya Port. From here, our private and comfortable vehicle awaits for the scenic drive back to Cusco, crossing the lush cloud forest and the dramatic landscapes of the Andean mountains.
As we travel through the Manu Biosphere Reserve, we make several stops along the route to observe wildlife, take short walks, and enjoy the final panoramic views of this extraordinary region. These pauses offer one last opportunity to appreciate the rich biodiversity and ever-changing scenery that define the Manu rainforest.
Midday, we enjoy a picnic lunch in nature, surrounded by fresh mountain air and forested valleys, before continuing our journey toward the Andes.
We arrive in Cusco in the early evening (around 6:00 p.m.), where we provide a direct transfer to your hotel, marking the end of an unforgettable 4-day Manu Cultural Zone tour—an immersive experience filled with wildlife encounters, rainforest exploration, and lasting memories of Peru’s natural wonders.
