This 6 day Manu National Park tour takes you into the heart of the Amazon rainforest, exploring the Manu Reserved Zone, one of the most biodiverse regions in Peru. Starting from Cusco, the journey features wildlife observation, jungle lodges, river excursions, and opportunities to see giant otters, colorful macaws and other Amazon animals.
Itinerary
Journey from Cusco to Manu National Park via Cloud Forest
Travel from Cusco to Manu National Park, visit Ninamarca Cemetery, Paucartambo, cloud forest, and see Peru’s national bird, the Cock of the Rock.
Early Morning Departure from Cusco
We start early in the morning for an 8-hour journey from Cusco, traveling through scenic landscapes that reach up to 4,000 meters above sea level. Along the way, we make stops at significant cultural sites, including the pre-Inca Ninamarca Cemetery and the folkloric village of Paucartambo (2,900 m).
Entrance to Manu National Park – Acjanaco
Our adventure continues to Acjanaco, the entrance to Manu National Park. From here, we descend through the lush cloud forest, home to spectacular vegetation such as orchids, ferns, bromeliads, and begonias.
Wildlife and Birdwatching
As we explore, we may spot the first mammals of the trip, including woolly monkeys and capuchin monkeys. One of the highlights is a visit to see the Cock of the Rock (Rupicola peruviana), Peru’s national bird, performing its famous mating dance. Other incredible birds like quetzals, tanagers, trogons, and hummingbirds can also be observed in this vibrant ecosystem.
Meals and Arrival at Bamboo Lodge
Breakfast, snacks, and lunch are included and served along the way. In the afternoon, we arrive at Bamboo Lodge (700 m above sea level), where guests enjoy dinner and spend the night in comfortable double rooms with private bathrooms.
Journey to the Lowland Rainforest and Hummingbird Sanctuary
Travel from bamboo Lodge to the lowland rainforest via Atalaya, visit the hummingbird sanctuary, spot over 18 hummingbird species, monkeys, caimans, and enjoy a night jungle walk.
Morning Transfer to Atalaya
After an early breakfast, we continue our adventure by minibus, passing the charming village of Pilcopata and crossing the Pilcopata River to reach the small port of Atalaya (550 m above sea level). Along the way, we make stops for short walks to observe birds and visit the spectacular hummingbird sanctuary, where you can photograph more than 18 species of hummingbirds as well as other colorful birds.
Scenic Views and River Journey
Before reaching Atalaya, we enjoy a breathtaking view of the river basin from a lookout point. At the port, we embark on a 5-hour motorized canoe journey down the Alto Madre de Dios River, entering the lowland rainforest. Today, the landscape gradually changes, passing the Pantiacolla Mountains and rocky riverbanks, providing excellent opportunities to spot wildlife.
Wildlife Watching Along the River
The riverbanks are home to fascinating animals such as Fasciated Tiger Herons, Kingfishers, Skimmers, Vultures, caimans, and some of the 15 species of monkeys inhabiting Manu National Park. This is an exceptional chance to connect with the Amazon rainforest wildlife in its natural environment.
Evening at Hummingbird Lodge
In the afternoon, we arrive at Hummingbird Lodge , where we spend the night in comfortable double rooms. Before bedtime, enjoy a guided night walk to observe nocturnal wildlife, including insects, frogs, and snakes.
Exploring Manu National Park and Wildlife on the River
Travel through the Reserved Zone of Manu National Park, spot wildlife like jaguars, monkeys, caimans, tapirs, and enjoy the primary Amazon rainforest on a scenic boat ride.
Morning Boat Journey into the Reserved Zone
After breakfast, we board our boat and continue our adventure deeper into Manu National Park. Entering the Reserved Zone, we travel along the Manu River for approximately 5–6 hours, surrounded by pristine primary rainforest and breathtaking natural scenery.
Wildlife Spotting in the Amazon
During our river journey, we have the chance to observe the rich biodiversity of Manu, including colorful birds, playful monkeys, capybaras, caimans, and tapirs. With some luck, we may even catch sight of the elusive jaguar, the largest wildcat in South America.
Arrival at Casa Machiguenga Lodge
In the afternoon, we arrive at Casa Machiguenga Lodge, situated in the heart of Manu National Park. Here, you can relax and immerse yourself in the sounds and sights of the Amazon rainforest, enjoying a unique and unforgettable jungle experience.
Cocha Salvador Excursion and Primary Forest Exploration
Explore Cocha Salvador Lake in Manu National Park, spot giant otters, monkeys, birds, and caimans, and walk through the pristine primary forest on a guided jungle tour.
Morning Excursion to Cocha Salvador Lake
This day is truly special as we explore the virgin primary forest of the Reserved Zone of Manu National Park. Our adventure includes a visit to the famous Cocha Salvador Lake, home to the endangered giant otters, which thrive here thanks to strict habitat protection. Other wildlife, including monkeys, colorful birds, and black caimans, also benefit from this conservation effort.
Catamaran Ride and Wildlife Observation
We discover the calm waters of Cocha Salvador aboard a catamaran. Our knowledgeable guide explains the unique wildlife of Manu National Park, including species that are found only in this protected area.

Journey to Pantiacolla Lodge and Cocha Otorongo Observation Tower.
Travel along the Manu River to Pantiacolla Lodge, visit Cocha Otorongo observation tower, spot birds and wildlife, and explore Amazon flora and fauna with guided trails.
Morning Departure from Casa Machiguenga Lodge
Early in the morning, we leave Casa Machiguenga Lodge and begin our boat journey along the Manu River towards Pantiacolla Lodge. On the way, we stop at the small Cocha Otorongo Lake to climb an 18-meter observation tower overlooking Cocha Otorongo—a perfect spot to admire the scenery, watch birds, and enjoy extraordinary wildlife views all around.
Scenic River Journey
We continue traveling along the Manu River for approximately 6–7 hours, exiting the Reserved Zone and following the Alto Madre de Dios River. The changing landscapes and riverbanks provide more opportunities to observe the diverse Amazon wildlife, including birds, monkeys, and other rainforest animals.
Arrival at Pantiacolla Lodge
In the afternoon, we arrive at Pantiacolla Lodge (400 m above sea level), where we spend the night in comfortable accommodations. Our expert guide introduces guests to the surrounding flora and fauna, making it an educational and immersive Amazon experience.
Optional Night Walk
After dinner, guests have the option to join a guided night walk, discovering nocturnal wildlife such as frogs, insects, and snakes, and experiencing the jungle in a completely new way.
Return Journey from Manu National Park to Cusco
Travel back from Manu National Park to Cusco, explore the cloud forest, enjoy a final Amazon lunch, and return through the Andes to your hotel.
Morning Departure from Pantiacolla Lodge
After breakfast, we begin our return journey by boat, traveling upstream for approximately 2 hours to the town of Atalaya, where our transport awaits to take us back to Cusco.
Stops in the Cloud Forest and Final Lunch
Along the way, we make stops in the cloud forest, observing the rich flora and fauna one last time. We enjoy a final lunch together amidst the beautiful landscapes of the Manu region, soaking in the sights and sounds of the jungle.
Journey Through the Andes to Cusco
After lunch, we ascend back to the Andes, returning to Cusco with plenty of memories from the Amazon adventure. Upon arrival, we drop you off at your hotel, concluding your 6-day / 5-night Manu National Park tour.
